About the Work
It’s difficult to capture with a camera what you see with your eyes. It’s even more difficult to paint a changing landscape. Light, shapes, and textures are in constant flux. Instead, I choose to paint what I remember. But memory doesn’t prioritize shapes and colors the same way the lens does. Instead, it harbors emotion and impact. You paint how you encountered the landscape. The violet shift is exaggerated in this piece because the violet color had an impact on my senses.
Field Exposures, Nos. 01–08, a series of small mixed media paintings exploring landscape through memory. Each work considers memory as a kind of delayed photographic development, retaining traces of color, atmosphere, and observation while allowing the original image to shift to express an intimate detail, rather than a broader view.
