About the Work
As I’ve spent time pondering on and painting our recent trip to Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, CO, the desire to capture layered monolithic forms was persistent. The stone monuments jut into the sky in difficult to comprehend forms without experiencing firsthand their impressive shadows. The enormity of the pillars are breathtaking. To capture such a shocking encounter color must be incorporated somehow. I think we feel in color and can more easily comprehend impact when it is present, especially on a small canvas.
Field Exposures, Nos. 01–08, a series of small mixed media paintings exploring landscape through memory. Each work considers memory as a kind of delayed photographic development, retaining traces of color, atmosphere, and observation while allowing the original image to shift to express an intimate detail, rather than a broader view.
