Dark Ecology, 2026
The painting series Dark Ecology began as an intuitive study of color and texture, evolving into a deep exploration of murky, underwater environments. Built through imperceptible layers of paint, brighter colors and chunky textures are deliberately quieted by deep blue tones. Like the deep sea, the illusion of depth in these paintings is achieved through intentional distortion. This series explores life beyond the reach of easy light, reflecting the resilience of living things, their quiet endurance, and what it takes to truly flourish in the dark.

About the Work
Seaweed is tied to some of my earliest memories of the Southern California coast. Long days spent wading through the shallows, tangling it around my hands, wearing it as imaginary hair, and feeling it drift around my feet left a lasting impression. Nothing but seaweed feels like seaweed.
Beneath the surface, it thrives in constant motion—swaying with the tides, rooted yet responsive to the world around it. As part of the Dark Ecology series, this work reflects on the hidden life that exists beyond our immediate view and the quiet beauty found in places often overlooked.

Artist Note
Initially, I meant for these pieces to be brighter—full of light and color. As they progressed, the need arose to muddy and distort the images with layers of murky blue-greens and moss-like textures. I had recently experienced a major life event, and something about the swaying and distortion of underwater environments mirrored my inner landscape. Light in the dark is much more impactful; it has a stunning effect. Perhaps light in the deep is meant to captivate and cause paralysis. Yet, I found myself longing to be captured by that light and rocked to peace by the current. I can't look at this collection without feeling a preternatural sense of calm. These works increased my capacity for acceptance.
Where to Situate This Work
My work seeks to promote thought, returning the observer to a place of quiet stillness. Because these pieces embody a sense of suspension and deep reflection, they are ideally suited for spaces designed for contemplation, focus, and meditation.
In the Home: They offer a grounding, tranquil presence in bedrooms, private libraries, or personal meditation corners.
In the Office: They provide a calming visual anchor in executive workspaces, study rooms, or creative studios where deep, uninterrupted thinking is required.
