About the Work
In the dark, light attracts, feeds, and protects. It seems otherworldly, and in a sense it is. Bioluminescence is a chemical phenomenon, but metaphorically it speaks to the ever-present realty of contrasts; dark does not exist without light, heat would be difficult to comprehend without the cold, and the softness of a feather is indefinitive without experiencing the density of granite.

In contemplation of opposition we find the beauty of a dark ecology. Stillness, depth, and even what we assume is void, isn’t without life or light. Each gives meaning to the other.

About the Work
An ingenious organism, algae creates its own food through sunlight and forms vast underwater forests that sustain countless forms of marine life. Underwater forests—what a remarkable thing to imagine. Its luminous greens, unusual forms, and quiet vitality reveal an unexpected abundance beneath the surface.

The beauty is subtle. Life thrives in the depths.

As part of the Dark Ecology series, this work reflects on the hidden systems that support life and the often-overlooked places where resilience, growth, and transformation quietly unfold.

About the Work
Seaweed is tied to some of my earliest memories of the Southern California coast. Long days spent wading through the shallows, tangling it around my hands, wearing it as imaginary hair, and feeling it drift around my feet left a lasting impression. Nothing but seaweed feels like seaweed.

Beneath the surface, it thrives in constant motion—swaying with the tides, rooted yet responsive to the world around it. As part of the Dark Ecology series, this work reflects on the hidden life that exists beyond our immediate view and the quiet beauty found in places often overlooked.

About the Work
Coral thrives in places that seem unlikely to support life. Living on the edge of immense depths, it builds colorful communities—castles, estates, and high rise apartments—intricate skeletal forms, creating shelter for a multitude of species. Strange, beautiful, and endlessly varied, coral reminds us that life often flourishes where we least expect it.

As part of the Dark Ecology series, this work reflects on the vitality, resilience, and interconnectedness found beneath the surface.
