About the Work
I remember when I consciously started laughing whenever I interacted with other people. Peers would often accuse me of being mad. I wasn't. I was thinking.

Maybe I have one of those faces.

So I created a new persona. I didn't want to make others uncomfortable, so I made myself uncomfortable instead. It was a difficult habit to break.

I'm still working on it.

For many of us, the world feels louder than it appears. We learn early how to adapt—to become who we need to be in order to belong, succeed, or simply move through the day unnoticed. What begins as self-protection often becomes performance.

The curtain in this work represents the space between the private self and the public one. A threshold between observation and participation. Safety and exposure. Behind it, we can watch without being seen. We can rest from the demands of the stage.

But no one can remain hidden forever.

This piece is a quiet reminder to step forward without abandoning oneself. Not performing. Not pretending. Simply allowing who we are to be enough.

Behind the Curtain is part of The Hiding Place series, which explores the inner sanctuaries we create to survive life's storms—hidden spaces where the self can rest, reflect, and remain intact. Through layered texture, color, and abstraction, these works become quiet shelters. Places to exhale.
